Masterstudio: The Architect changemaker Semester 1

Jules Pattyn

The main theme in my design is circular symbiosis. Creating a beneficial mutual factor for all organisms involved. Besides designing for the people with resources taken from the forests, those same resources are given back to the initial forest residents. This idea is geared towards the local inhabitants like the owl, the bat and the swallow by constructing shelters that imitate their natural habitat. More so they are given back in the original material. This original appearance is possible by using only the waste produced by the plain bandsaw cutting of logs as we know it. When using the already existing structure of the building more experimental ways of creating half log structures can be applied. In the pavilion these ways result in connections using only wood.  The pavilion celebrates an alternative perception of timber appreciation, suggesting that the beauty of material should not be limited only to the larger and perfect uniform wooden pattern but embracing the natural aesthetic of the material.
