WALLOON BRABANT
Walloon Brabant is geologically classified as a loam region, however following our field trips it became clear that this material is not easily found. The most prominent material found in this region is sand. This versatile material is used in several applications, from masonry to concrete manufacturing to simply using it to level out landscapes. None of the quarries we visited mentioned the use of Walloon Brabant sand in glass manufacturing.
Beside sand, this region is also the home of one of Europe’s largest porphyry quarries and the only remaining active quarry of the local Gobertange stone. In the built landscape of Walloon Brabant you will find many buildings constructed using these local stones, old and new.
