SOUTH HAINAUT
The southern region of Hainaut is known for its industrial cities such as Mons, Charleroi and Soignies. Many of these centres of industry are surrounded by quarries on the outskirts, however we also chose to visit smaller quarries in the countryside. Most of the quarries we came across are still active and will remain so for a long time.
We found mostly limestone in southern Hainaut. In the raw material map above, we see a clear vein of limestone coming to the surface around Soignies, diving under the coal in Charleroi and reappearing around Liège. Only in Soignies was the limestone of such good quality; it is mostly used as a decorative stone and sold in slabs. Limestone mined from the other quarries contained too much carbon so is used primarily as a gravel stone.
