NORTH HAINAUT

Luna Coesens - Niels Francq - Jannes Hendrickx - Fien Meerpoel

NORTH HAINAUT

South of the Flanders border is the northern part of Hainaut, a province with a variety of natural materials from sand to gravel to limestone and an abundance of clay. The gravels found in Milieu and Bois du Prince are used decoratively, whereas the Porphyre of Lessines gravel is much stronger and used in infrastructure. The clay found in the north of Hainaut is mostly used for brick manufacturing.

Most of the quarries we found are still being excavated, some close to their end of lease, others have longer-term excavation plans. One abandoned quarry we found, Maffle, was filled with water in the early 1900s and made into a nature park and stone museum.
