NAMUR
The region of Namur is gifted with rich and varied raw materials, as visible in the map above. It is also home to the capital city of the Wallonia region, Namur, which is an industrial centre that utilises its proximity to the river Meuse to transport materials. We visited a range of in-use and abandoned quarries alongside recycling plants. Overall, we were able to source gravels, sand, loam and clay from the region, all of which we tested in our prototype bricks.
In the south of Namur, we visited Carrière de Beauchâteau near Senzeilles, an old source of the well-known Belgian red ‘marble’ called Rouge Royale. Further north we found multiple sites to collect limestone gravels and sands, alongside recycled concrete gravels from a site called Recynam that processes circular building materials. Finally, we gathered two clays, a yellow clay which was considered a waste product of the limestone quarry Calcaires de Florennes, and a red clay extracted by Argilières Hins for commercial use.
