EAST-FLANDERS
East Flanders is an interesting province when it comes to finding all sorts of local raw materials. Visiting active quarries, we found sand, loam, and clay being processed for commercial usage. We’ve also visited multiple abandoned quarries in the area of Stekene, Temse, Haaltert, and Ninove. The huge pits and mountains created by the excavation activities created a fascinating landscape.
In Haaltert we visited an old quarry where we’ve stumbled upon Dany, an old retired brick maker who still makes handmade bricks with loam from this site. To make our ’East Flemish brick’, it was hard to get raw materials from the quarries. So, we visited recycling sites in the area to collect useful ‘circular’ granulates.
