THE ASIAT MARKET

Jannes Hendrickx, Tine Pillaert, Brecht Vertongen

The market of Asiat refers to the Grote Markt of Vilvoorde. In 2019, the renovated Grote Markt gave the center back to the people of Vilvoorde. Parking lots made place for a new role and identity for the heart of the city. It became a new meeting place with an important link in the network of squares and shopping streets. At the edges, room was made for intimacy through the implantation of benches, trees, bicycle racks and terraces. The Asiat Site, a former military domain, continues this line of giving places back to the people. During the summer of Asiat there will be a summer bar, events such as Horst will take place, workshops, etc...
The pizza oven will be a central element in this, where the same elements as on the Grote Markt will come into play. Through pizza baking, eating and drinking together, we create an intimate place on this large site. The interesting thing about a market is that it is something of coming and going, it is something temporary. We want to take this idea into our project: the work tables are covered by a market stall, these two elements together form 1 object. But if the pizza chef has his own work table he can replace it. In addition, the pizza oven also has its own shelter, with a space for storing wood that can dry due to the heat of the oven. When it is stormy for example, the stalls can be taken away or you can move them to the places you want, just like a real market. We designed the market stalls in such a way that you only need to be with 2 people to break it down and hang it on the covered rack. In this way, we create a handy design with a lot of possibilities in it.
