LA ROCHE-EN-ARDENNE
The site we have chosen is a quarry located in La Roche en Ardenne. The quarry is almost ten years inactive, awaiting the renewal of the license. We chose the highest spot on the quarry surrounded by hiking trails and a forest with a beautiful view where two hills are crossing each other.
We got our inspiration from the castle La Roche situated near by our site. We wanted to create the same classic design so our tower could look like uniform with the castle. Our tower has a cylindrical shape and exists out of two walls. The external wall is made of schist, which is the same material as the castle, and the internal wall is made of rammed earth, with the materials we acquired from another quarry. The tower is 15 metres high; for the circulation, we decided to use two staircases since the stairs are 80cm wide it is not possible for two people to use the same stairs for opposite directions.
During the construction of our model we used 3D printed moulds; at 1:1 scale we would use wooden formwork, which builds up layer by layer. Both walls have a thickness of 50cm at the bottom and 20cm on the top.
