Masterstudio: The Architect changemaker Semester 1

Adriana Martínez

In response to the necessity of addressing the effects of the construction sector on climate change, this project is dedicated to the reutilization of building materials in an attempt to help with resource conservation. Although the tannery offered many possibilities of material reuse, this project explores the repurposing of roof tiles.

Roof tiles are a very common construction material in architecture often thrown away after use. This pavilion aims to creatively reimagine the use of this material other than its original one. For this reason, the concept of the project is to represent a set of building system explorations, not just one.

All in all, the final design is a pavilion that brings together 3 different tile construction systems for the roof tiles: firstly setting one roof tile on top of the other, then diagonally and lastly in a triangular form.
With the aim of playing with various lighting styles to provide different experiences throughout the visit. The pavilion represents a journey through corridors in which the user enters in an atmosphere of terracotta color while getting different insights depending on the lighting and the width of the aisles.
Moreover, the project was enhanced by researching on the construction of arches using roof tiles, with inspiration drawn from segmental brick arches, which were later integrated into each corridor. Regarding the materiality of the project, the tiles are assembled with a clay mortar, although not all of them need it, as some of them are self-supporting.
